New Orleans is like no place else I’ve ever been. Although it is most commonly compared to European cities, (and it definitely is the closest thing to Europe in the US), it is still somehow different. I must admit, after living there during my college years, I am a bit prejudiced.
I love this city for many reasons, but mostly I think it is because it is ever-evolving. The music, the art, the architecture, and the culture have deep roots. I appreciate the history of this city, and I am excited by the changes as well.
There are a few things that are a given:
The food will not disappoint, the booze will never stop pouring, the music will knock your socks off, and the personal interaction between the locals, the tourists, and those who fall somewhere in between will be an experience you won’t want to forget!
The options for restaurants, music, and entertainment are plentiful. It is hard to make a bad choice. Each time I visit I try new restaurants, but I always make sure I get to my old favorites (Galatoires, Pascale’s Manale, The Original Pierre Maspero’s, Tujaques, Café du Monde) to name a few. I guess it’s nostalgic to me. Galatoires reminds me of my sweet daddy. He loved Broussard’s too. Those places conjure up great memories of days gone by. But let me reassure you, they are every bit as good today as they were way back when.
This city is very inspirational. I love it because without even meaning to, it promotes individualism. Anything goes and nobody cares. I took the opportunity on my last trip to sit on a bench and look at the mighty Mississippi. There is just something about water that spurs creativity. I found some amazing antique pieces that I am incorporating into unique jewelry designs. So if you get lucky enough to run away for a weekend, take advantage of all that this unique city has to offer. No matter how exhausted and stuffed you are when you leave, you’ll be ready to come again. New Orleans’ magnetism is just like that!
